How To Keep Your Shipping Container Secure

Keeping your shipping container secure is, for many businesses, of utmost priority. This can be the case no matter how you use it: as a converted office space, an open bar or just for storage. They’re ideal for storing things securely but not if they’re easy to get into.

Thankfully, there are more than a few ways to keep your shipping container secure. Here are five ways you can help in keeping up with tight security.

Heavy Duty Padlocks

The easiest and most efficient way of ensuring security is providing your container with a heavy-duty padlock. With a thick chain wrapped around the door handle, you’ll rest easy knowing that you’ve just made it much more difficult for a thief to break in.

The best kind of padlock for shipping containers is the shutter ones, the bigger the better. We also recommend ones that have their own key to unlock. Padlocks are fine but there is always a chance the would-be thief could guess correctly.

Lockboxes

The major downside to padlocks is that, if you have the right tools, they are fairly easy to break. Bolt cutters are their worst enemy. This is why lockboxes are so great; they make sure that padlocks are exceedingly difficult, if not impossible to break open.

They take the form of steel boxes which fit snugly over your container’s padlock. There’s normally enough room to open the padlock with a key, but not for any tool which may pose a threat to your security. If you have a padlock securing your container, a lockbox is certainly recommended.

Inner Bolts

Working in much the same way a deadlock would in an ordinary house, an inner bolt slides across one door of the container from the inside, making it impossible to open unless you open the other door.

Crossbar Locks

This lock stops the right-hand door of a container from undoing its locks, much like how a stop lock works on a car’s steering wheel. Pretty simple but very effective as an added security measure on your container.

Alarms

Finally, adding an alarm system to your container can be an extremely effective security measure. It may sound like overkill but you’ll be surprised how well this works. Of course, it works best if your container is close to a nearby building but most can be fitted out with pretty sophisticated hardware, including motion sensors.
